Ex-prosecutor general’s terror conviction overturned

The High Court has overturned former prosecutor general Muhthaz Muhsin’s conviction on a charge of participating in committing an act of terrorism. He was accused of conspiring to kidnap former president Yameen with a forged arrest warrant.
A three-judge panel of the appellate court ruled unanimously Thursday to overturn the sentence.
Muhsin was removed from his post in November 2015 by the pro-government majority in parliament following reports that he was stalling bribery charges against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.
High Court frees ex-magistrate Nihan

Nihan was accused of conspiring to kidnap former president Yameen with a fraudulent arrest warrant.
The criminal court verdict “contravened judicial and legal principles,” the appellate court ruled Wednesday.
Nihan’s arrest in 2016 was condemned by the International Commission of Jurists, which called it “another blow to the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.”
Youth minister acquitted over ‘false reporting’ tweet

Former MP Ahmed Mahloof was acquitted Wednesday on a charge of false reporting to law enforcement over a tweet alleging culpability over custodial deaths.
The newly-appointed minister could have faced a jail sentence of nearly five months if found guilty. Mahloof was also put on trial on a charge of obstruction of justice for distributing masks at an opposition protest.
Mahloof was kept in police custody for more than a month before he was transferred to house arrest in early April.
President establishes "Committee on releasing political detainees

In his efforts to release the detainees who have been criminally charged for political motives, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has established the “Committee on Releasing Political Detainees”.
The committee was established on the first day of President Solih’s term, 17 November 2018, in keeping with his electoral pledge to initiate the task on the first day of office.
The committee consists of: Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdullah, Commissioner of Police Hamdhoon Rasheed, Legal Counsel to the President Ahmed Abdullah Afeef and Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath
